Bill Holst bought his first backhoe and truck more than 30 years ago, when he entered the excavation, sand, and gravel business. In 1979 he opened Holst Excavating, Inc., and over the years expanded to 11 pits across Minnesota and Wisconsin, three wash plants, and three crushing spreads; complete with the requisite heavy equipment.
In 2000, with production at one million tons of material annually, Bill sold the business to Aggregate Industries, now owned by Holcim Group, and entered into a lease for the pit properties.
Since 2009, Holst has operated an aggregate wash plant in Hager City, Wisconsin, and runs a pre-screening operation in the same area with a fleet of 25 trucks. Bill remains actively involved in the sand and gravel business today, and projects great optimism for the future of the industry.
